Elements before the Altar of Madonna Tenebrae

Madonna: What offering is this that you bring in?
 
R.3: The soul of Winter, the fate that all must one day win. (Skull)
 
Madonna: (Holding Skull between both hands and say:)
Spirits of the Dead I call upon you.
Dark souls, thee I woo.
 
Madonna: What is it that burns in the night air?
 
R.1: The scent from an age past I wish to share. (Incense is taken and ceremonial used, saying:)
 
Madonna: Conjure and fascinate
I draw forth our Fate.
 
Madonna: What comes knocking at my hearth's door?
 
R.4: The bones of our ancestors, who have gone before.
(Rattling bones.)
 
Madonna: (Knocking the bones, say:)
I knock once for the Devil, twice for Prudence;
Thrice for Our Lady, and four times for All else.
 
Madonna: What is veiled and guarded from sight?
 
R.2: A hidden mystery, a message for the Lady of Night. (Veiling the lantern with the robe.)
 
Madonna: (With hands held either side of flame say:)
Creature of Fire I conjure thee,
What does your light reveal to me. (Place it on the altar.)
